DESCRIPTION-
OS/2 needs the ability to do power and display management for
system other than laptops on battery power. My laptop shuts
down its screen after a period of inactivity if its running
batteries, but it never dims the display or goes idle if plugged
into the wall. Similarly, my tower system never dims the screen
or shuts down if OS/2 Warp 4 is running despite BIOS settings to
enable screen shutdown and system shutdown. I've work around
the monitor not shutting down with a freeware product that uses
DPMS to dim the screen. However using this precludes lockup,
which I would still like to have active. Lockup could work in
conjunction with placing the display in standby if OS/2
supported power management even when A/C line was present. The
benefits are saving wear on the monitor and saving power (and
reducing heat load) when the system is idle. Also, from a
competitive viewpoint, Win95 does this (at least on a new Aptiva
C67 I just saw).
